The Story

What is claimed · what is sourced · what is still disputed

With the tax men closing in, the gangster packed a steel box, cash, bonds, diamonds, seven million by the telling, and drove it into the Catskills with his bodyguard. Weeks later, both men were gunned down in a New Jersey chophouse. Schultz lingered a full day, delirious, spilling half-clues to a police stenographer: don't let Satan draw you too fast. The box has never surfaced. The transcript reads like a treasure map written in fever.
