How to Use a Metal Detector

The machine, demystified. Settings, target identification, depth, the metals it reads, the two technologies, and the cure for constant falsing.

Operating the machine

Using a metal detector well is a simple craft that takes minutes to start and years to master. The basics: assemble it, set the ground balance and sensitivity, pick a search mode, and sweep low and slow.

The motion is the part beginners rush. Keep the coil close to the ground, an inch or two, and level through the whole swing, do not let it rise at the ends like a pendulum. Sweep slowly, side to side, overlapping each pass so you do not skip ground. When you get a repeatable signal from more than one direction, pinpoint it, then dig a clean plug.

The rest is listening. Learn what your machine's tones and numbers mean by digging your signals and seeing what was there. A few hours of that teaches more than any manual.

The three settings

Three settings do most of the work on any detector, and understanding them turns a confusing beep box into a tool you control: ground balance, sensitivity, and discrimination.

Ground balance tunes the machine to ignore the natural minerals in the soil, which otherwise cause false signals, especially in mineralized or salty ground. Sensitivity sets how hard the detector listens: higher reaches deeper but picks up more interference and chatter, so you raise it until the machine gets noisy, then back off. Discrimination tells the detector to ignore certain conductivity ranges, usually to skip iron and trash, but crank it too high and you blank out good low conductors like gold and some jewelry.

The art is balance. Enough sensitivity for depth without chatter, enough discrimination to cut junk without erasing treasure, and a ground balance matched to where you stand.

Target identification

Turn on a modern detector and it shows a number when it beeps, and beginners either worship those numbers or ignore them. The truth sits in between. That number is the target ID, often called a VDI, the machine's guess at how conductive the buried object is, on a scale from low to high.

Low numbers mean low conductivity, foil, small gold, tiny things. The middle is the world of pull tabs and nickels. High numbers lean toward copper and silver, the big rings and coins. The detector pairs the number with a tone, so over time you learn to read a hunt by ear and eye together.

But treat the number as a strong hint, not gospel. Depth, soil minerals, trash next to a target, and the angle of a buried object all push the reading around, and the only way to truly know is to dig. Good hunters use the ID to skip obvious junk and to get curious, then let the shovel settle the argument.

Falsing and chatter

A detector that beeps constantly, with no target in the hole, is the most common beginner headache, and it almost always has a simple cause. The catch-all word for it is falsing, or chatter, and you can usually tame it in a minute.

The usual suspects: sensitivity set too high, so the machine reacts to its own noise and to nearby interference. Electrical interference from power lines, phones, or another detector. Mineralized or salty ground that needs a fresh ground balance. Or a coil that is loose, knocked, or its cable damaged. Work through those, lower the sensitivity, re-balance to the ground, move away from interference, check the coil, and the chatter usually stops.

And sometimes the beeping is real: a patch thick with tiny trash or iron will light a detector up. That is not a fault, it is a busy site, and a smaller coil or tighter discrimination helps.

Detection depth

Depth is the question every beginner asks and the one most over-promised in adverts. The real answer is that depth is not a fixed number, it is a result of the target, the ground, and the machine working together.

For a coin-sized object, most entry-level detectors reach six to eight inches, and a good VLF machine in clean soil can push a large coin to ten or even fourteen inches. Bigger or more conductive objects ring out deeper. Mineralized soil, salt, and trash all rob depth, which is why two detectors can give wildly different results on the same patch.

What it can sense

A metal detector detects metal, all of it, which is both the appeal and the catch. Gold, silver, copper, bronze, iron, aluminum, lead, nickel: if it conducts, the coil can sense it. What changes is how easily, and whether the machine chooses to tell you.

Conductivity is the key. High conductors like silver and copper ring loud and clear. Gold is a poorer conductor and small gold sits low on the scale, which is why nugget hunting needs special machines. Iron is everywhere as nails and junk, so detectors let you discriminate it out, at the risk of also masking good targets nearby.

One common myth: detectors cannot find pure diamonds, gemstones, or bone, because those do not conduct. You find a diamond ring by detecting its metal band, not the stone.

VLF and pulse induction

Shopping for a detector, you quickly hit two letter salads: VLF and PI. They are the two main technologies, and knowing the difference saves you from buying the wrong machine.

VLF, very low frequency, is what most hobby detectors use. It is sensitive, discriminates well so you can skip trash, and is great for coins, relics, and jewelry on land. Its weakness is mineralized and salty ground, where it struggles. PI, pulse induction, punches through mineralized soil and salt water and reaches great depth, which is why it rules on salt beaches and for deep caches and big gold, but it discriminates poorly, so you dig more trash.

The rule of thumb: VLF for general land hunting and good target separation, PI for salt water, heavily mineralized ground, deep targets, and serious gold.

Weather and water resistance

Weather rarely stops a determined detectorist, and some of the best conditions come with it. Most detectors handle damp fine, and wet ground actually helps, but you do need to know your machine's limits.

Light rain is usually no problem, and many control boxes are weather-resistant, though not all are waterproof, so check yours and cover it if in doubt. The payoff is real: wet soil conducts better and can give you a little extra depth, making the day after a rain prime. Snow is workable too, you can detect over and through light snow, and a quiet winter beach can be excellent, though frozen ground is hard to dig.

The cautions are simple: protect a non-waterproof control box, keep battery compartments sealed, dry your gear afterward, and mind your own comfort and footing in cold and wet.
